WHAT IS GENICULAR ARTERY EMBOLIZATION?
Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) is a safe and effective minimally-invasive procedure that provides knee pain relief for patients with osteoarthritis (OA).
This procedure is performed by our doctors at New England Endovascular Center who are Interventional Radiologists (IR) and specialize in using X-rays and other live imaging modalities to treat diseases without surgery. Genicular Artery Embolization is a minimally-invasive procedure where our doctors reduce the blood flow to the inflamed synovium, which is the lining of the knee joint. This results in decreased inflammation associated with osteoarthritis creating rapid relief to the knee.
What is Osteoarthritis Knee Pain?
Arthritis is a medical term used to describe many conditions involving inflammation that causes joint pain. Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease, is caused by the cartilage of the joint being worn over time and is the most common form of arthritis. The knees, hips, hands, and spine are the most common regions in the body inflicted by osteoarthritis. Sadly, it cannot be reversed; however, there are some treatments available to help improve joint function or reduce pain.
The risk of developing osteoarthritis increases with overuse of the joint, injury to the joint, age, and obesity. Women are more likely to develop osteoarthritis and genetics can indicate an increased risk for osteoarthritis.
