Plantar Fasciitis Embolization
What is Plantar Fasciitis Embolization?
Plantar Fasciitis Embolization (PFE) is a safe and effective minimally-invasive, non-surgical procedure to treat chronic plantar fasciitis, especially when traditional therapies have failed.
This procedure is performed by our doctors at New England Endovascular Center who are Interventional Radiologists (IR) and specialize in using X-rays and other live imaging modalities to treat diseases without surgery.
Plantar fasciitis is often associated with abnormal increased blood flow (neovascularization) around the plantar fascia, which correlates with chronic inflammation and pain. PFE aims to reduce this abnormal blood flow.
What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is a condition where the plantar fascia—a thick band of tissue on the bottom of your foot that supports your arch—becomes irritated or inflamed. It’s one of the most common causes of heel pain and causes significant activity limitations and work loss for many individuals.
What are the common symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis?
Sharp heel pain, usually at the bottom of the heel.
Worst pain with first steps in the morning or after sitting.
Pain that eases with movement but returns after long standing or walking.
Tenderness where the heel meets the arch.
Tightness in the arch or calf.
Sometimes mild swelling in the heel area.
Who is a Candidate for Plantar Fasciitis Embolization?
Chronic heel pain lasting 6 months or more.
Symptoms that have not improved with conservative treatments such as stretching, orthotics, physical therapy, or steroid injections.
A desire to avoid surgery.
