Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE)
WHAT IS BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA (BPH)?
Enlarged Prostate
The prostate is a gland located just below the bladder. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra which is a small tube extending from the bladder that the urine must travel through to exit the body. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is enlargement of the prostate gland. This is extremely common, occurring in the majority of men above the age of 50. When the prostate gland enlarges, it can press on the urethra and can cause symptoms due to blocking the passage of urine. Not all men with enlarged prostates will experience symptoms. The likelihood of an enlarged prostate and the probability of it causing symptoms both increase with age.
